Volcanology is devoted to understanding all aspects of the volcano factory, including processes directly or indirectly related to the rise, emplacement and emission of magma, as well as its environmental impact. Papers that are accepted for publication in this specialty section appear online on average 83 days after submission.
Volcanology is devoted to understanding all aspects of the volcano factory, including processes directly or indirectly related to the rise, emplacement and emission of magma, as well as its environmental impact. We particularly welcome studies addressing the fundamental questions in Volcanology, including:
- development and dynamics of magma chambers;
- modalities of shallow rise and emplacement of magma;
- volcano unrest and eruption forecast;
- eruption triggering processes;
- dynamics of eruptive processes;
- environmental impact of eruptions.
Authors are encouraged to submit reports on theoretical and applied study dealing with the volcano factory, on Earth and in the Solar System, using a wide range of approaches, including field, remote sensing, geophysical, geodetic, geochemical, petrologic and modelling (analogue, analytical, numerical) data. Volcanology publishes top-quality papers on research results that derive from using these and related approaches and methods. Papers that are quantitative and combine two or more of the above approaches are particularly welcome.

Volcanology welcomes submissions of the following article types: Book Review, Correction, Data Report, Editorial, General Commentary, Hypothesis & Theory, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Protocols, Review, Specialty Grand Challenge and Technology Report.
All manuscripts must be submitted directly to the section Volcanology, where they are peer-reviewed by the Associate and Review Editors of the specialty section.
Articles published in the section Volcanology will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in all Frontiers specialty journals and sections. Focused Reviews are centered on the original discovery, place it into a broader context, and aim to address the wider community across all of Earth Science.
